Robert Brackman: Methods and Techniques of the Artists Craft
In the Presence of Greatness
Come and explore the techniques and methods of painting used by the internationally known and admired Noank artist Robert Brackman
as demonstrated by his devoted student and local artist Lois Constantine. Lois takes you into the world of Robert Brackman from the
painters viewpoint. Become acquainted with the basic approach Brackman used that caught the eye of famous entrepreneurs, presidents,
and Hollywood celebrities who requested that their portraits be painted by Brackman.
Lois Constantine feels so grateful to have been a protégé of Brackman. She was a novice painter at the time she meet Robert Brackman, however, he saw the artist in Lois and included her in his class. Lois understood him; they developed a close relationship as friend, mentor and father figure. Lois states. "I want to pass on his artistic method to as many people as I can. Mr. Brackman always said that painting is a mental attitude. To be a great painter you must cultivate your mind. He stressed the importance of studying masters of all periods, reading biographies, listening to music, poetry etc. to have an appreciation of all the arts. He believed that anyone could learn the craft of drawing and mixing colors, but only God could give that special quality that makes an artist." Lois is currently writing a book about her experiences with Robert Brackman scheduled to be finished in 2013. Kenneth Bates book entitled Brackman: His Art and Teaching is the most comprehensive account of Brackman to date.
Other paintings of Robert Brackman will be displayed at the Latham/Chester Store during the demonstration including an unfinished painting he was working on at the time of his death in 1980. If participants possess Brackman art and wish to share it with the group bring it along.
This retrospective demonstration and talk will include stories and anecdotes of the man, entitled "In the Presence of Greatness- Robert Brackman Methods and Techniques of the Artists Craft" will be held on Monday, October, 8, 2012 from 1:00-2:30pm at the Latham/Chester Store at the bottom of Main Street in Noank. This event coincides with the Brackman exhibit currently showing at the Noank Historical Museum on Sylvan Street in Noank. Viewing of the exhibition and refreshments will be served at the Museum following the event.
